We are seeking outstanding PhD candidates for our shortlisted Lord Kelvin/Adam Smith (LKAS) PhD research project: Innovation in Community Models of ‘Housing with Care’
Ageing is often d
epicted as a burden for society, but there is now a growing realisation that it also provides many opportunities for economic growth and innovation in housing, care and co-production. Aligned to this, a shift in thinking can be discerned from ‘care homes’ to alternative models of ‘housing with care’ that build on wider community assets. However, there is little evidence on the forms that ‘housing with care’ might take and the outcomes it might achieve. Working in selected countries, the project will explore the transformative potential that can be generated in intentional communities that focus on the needs of older people. It will examine how intergenerational elements can form a part of the culture and organisation in such settings. It will scrutinise how ‘smart homes’ can support the changing needs of older people over time. It will investigate the options for novel forms of housing tenure and co-ownership, and partnership with educational institutions.
The student will be supervised by Professor David Clark and Dr. Alistair Hunter, within the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Glasgow’s Dumfries campus. The School is located on the site of the proposed Crichton Care Campus and the student will gain unique insights into a housing with care facility ‘in the making’. The School also hosts the renowned Glasgow End of Life Studies Group, led by Prof. Clark and bringing together a dynamic group of academic staff, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students.
This studentship is open to candidates of any nationality, and applicants should demonstrate the following:
- A disciplinary background in one or more of the following areas: anthropology, gerontology, housing studies, human geography, planning, social policy, sociology
- Undergraduate degree – 1st / 2:1 (or international equivalent)
- Postgraduate Master’s degree – with Distinction / Merit (or international equivalent)
- Evidence of prior engagement with one or more of the project’s themes
- Evidence of previous success in or interest in research activity
- Evidence of both independence and ability to collaborate and function as part of a team
- Ability to act as an ambassador/advocate for the research project, both nationally and internationally
